Immersive Light Grid
Project Management & Technical Production Design
Project Overview
I successfully led a 2.5-year project, overseeing the development and implementation of an immersive exhibition space during the challenging Covid pandemic period. The project culminated in the delivery of a custom-designed rubber-walled black box theater featuring an advanced lighting system and a 16’ x 9’ truss-mounted tilting screen, demonstrating my ability to bridge creative vision with technical excellence, and collaborative team leadership.

Planning & Research
My approach began with comprehensive research and strategic planning. I initiated key consultations with industry leaders, including a collaborative meeting with the design team at the Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago. These insights informed my approach to production methodologies and material selections.

Project Management
I leveraged this knowledge to develop enhanced processes that balanced creative needs with technical requirements while ensuring adherence to new safety protocols, including an essential change to a non-toxic adhesive from the original spec which was too toxic to use in-house.
Because a massive quantity of adhesive was needed to glue rubber sheeting to the plywood panels for the black box theater walls, fume exposure was a major concern.
Switching production in-house led to significantly reduced costs by eliminating the need for both an outsourced space and an external contractor to complete the work. Most importantly it was paramount for my team’s safety and the health of other museum staff.

Technical Innovation
I led my creative team through the many challenges of designing and installing a specialized theater space with rubber lined walls and floor.
Through many iterations, I developed the power blueprint for the complex electroluminescent lighting system and established best practices for both technical safety and streamlined production processes throughout the project.

Problem Solving
Successful navigation of this project meant orchestrating complex supply chain logistics, often from vendors directly affected by Covid. I developed and maintained strong relationships with our many suppliers and adapted along with them as this project came together.
Adopting a highly flexible, agile project management approach was critical as I orchestrated supply chain logistics and evolved operational processes to meet expanding timelines and logistical challenges. Some of these streamlined operational strategies are things my team still draws on today.

Professional Impact
This project showcases my expertise in leading complex creative and technical projects, highlighting my ability to:
Successfully deliver ambitious projects in challenging circumstances
Innovate and adapt in response to evolving project requirements
Lead multi-disciplinary teams to achieve both creative and technical objectives
Balance artistic vision with practical constraints while maintaining project integrity
Through strategic planning, creative problem-solving, and effective leadership, I ensured the successful completion of a uniquely challenging project. My agile management approach prioritized innovation, safety, and excellence, resulting in an exceptional exhibition space that exceeded expectations and set new standards for future projects.
